Understanding The Different Cold Sore Stages

The worst thing about cold sores, besides the extreme pain and discomfort they cause, is that you never know when they can strike you. That is because the virus stays dormant in the body for a long time and its presence is never detected, because there are no outward signs of its existence.

It can start being active with no warning and once that happens, there is really nothing a patient can do except to allow the virus to run its course. Medicines can help to reduce the discomfort to some extent, but cannot do much else. However, understanding the different cold sore stages will allow the patient to track the progress of the disease and estimate when he will be fully recovered. One thing about the different cold sore stages is that they follow in a fixed sequence so that tracking the progression of the sickness is easy.

However, the different cold sore stages vary greatly in regard how long the symptoms take to go away.

The Different Cold Store Stages Explained

There is not point worrying about the dormant (or latent stage as it is often called). The subsequent different cold sore stages are enough to think about. The first of the different cold sore stages is the stage where the virus begins its journey from the recess of the body to the skin surface using the nerve ganglions as pathways. There is no visible symptom of this progression at this stage, but the patient may feel a burning and itching feeling on some parts of the skin.

This stage can last for between a few hours to a few days, depending on the virulence of the attack and the body’s natural resistance.

The second of the different cold sore stages is when the virus arrives at the skin surface and the redness and swelling starts. The skin becomes extremely tender to the touch. This is followed by one of the most painful of the different cold sore stages – when the small pus filled pimples called vesicles form in groups over the infected area. These pimples are very tender and painful.

The most painful of the different cold sore stages comes when the pimples burst open and join together to form one large sore or ulcer. This ulcer is very painful and oozes pus that is very infectious. During this period the patient often suffers from high temperatures.

The next of the different cold sore stages marks the beginning of the healing process with the start of the scab formation. Sadly, this does not mean any great reduction in pain or discomfort levels. The scabs may form and fall off three or four times during this stage and the formation of the new skin under the scabs will cause a great deal of irritation and itchiness. This condition can look very ugly, especially if it is a case of the later cold sore stages of lip healing.

In the last of the different cold sore stages, the scabs are gone and the new skin takes its place while the replacement of the cells destroyed under the skin continues. This can take up to two weeks, but since there is no pain of discomfort, normal life can be resumed.

Hypertension is a common condition in the United States, but it is also a serious one. High blood pressure is a serious risk factor for potentially life threatening issues like heart attack, stroke and cardiovascular disease. When a patient is diagnosed with hypertension, a doctor’s first goal is to bring the blood pressure back down to the normal range so further strain on the heart and cardiovascular system does not occur. In some cases, the patient is put on a special diet and exercise program to reduce blood pressure. However, many patients also require one of the common hypertension medications to keep their blood pressure in check. This article will describe some of the most common hypertension medications used for this purpose.

Step One: Diuretics One of the most common hypertension medications prescribed first is often a diuretic or water pill. These medications come by commercial names like Esidrix or Zaroxolyn and work by removing excess fluid and salt from the bloodstream. The excess is eliminated from your body through urination, which is why people on this medication often have to urinate more frequently. By removing the excess from the blood, the heart can pump it through the body more efficiently without undue wear and tear on this important organ.

Step Two: Beta Blockers and ACE Inhibitors These common hypertension medications may be prescribed if diuretics don’t work or in combination with a diuretic for best results. In some cases, these common hypertension medications may also be the first line of defense against high blood pressure. Beta blockers come under commercial names like Toprol and ACE inhibitors include commercial drugs like Capoten and Vasotec. These common hypertension medications work by increasing blood flow through the blood vessels, eliminating strain on the heart.

Other Options If these common hypertension medications do not work, there are other options available. Calcium channel blockers, angiotensin II receptor blockers and other drugs can be used when the more common hypertension medications do not work well on their own or cause undesirable side effects. It is very important that a patient and doctor work together through the long list of common hypertension medications to find the drugs that work the best in each individual situation. In some cases, a patient will be lucky enough to find the right drug the first time. In other cases, it may take numerous tries to find the best treatment combination.

Hypertension is a serious condition that can have potentially life-threatening consequences if left untreated. Fortunately, there are many options in hypertension medication to get blood pressure under control and reduce the risk of more serious complications.
