The Procedures of Boat Registration

Many people don’t realize at first that, just like with a car or truck or motorcycle, you have to get a boat

registered at the DMV.  This is because, just like those types of vehicles, boats can be dangerous and the state wants to know what boats are on its waters.  Many people forget to register their boats and find themselves faced with stiff fines when are caught boating without registration paperwork.  Unfortunately, many people aren’t aware of this and end up paying stiff fines when they take their boat out and get caught boating without valid registration.

There are certain types of boats that absolutely must be registered by law.  Powered boats are boats that have any kind of power source at all – whether it’s a legitimate power system or even just a small auxiliary power system.  Any powered boat that is to be used in “water of the state” must be registered; water of the state is defined as any rivers, lakes or streams, regardless of size, and all of the salt water off the coast until you get 3 miles off.  Those types of boats are the types that must go through the boat registration process with the DMV by law; not doing so can result in stiff penalties.

However, although it may seem like it, boat registration is not really all that difficult – or even that expensive, especially when you think of how much it costs to register some vehicles.  For powered boats – which is what nearly all boats being registered are – the fee is only $24.00.  For non-powered boats, which haven’t been required to be registered since June of 2004, the fee is only $10 and is entirely voluntary.  Bear in mind that if you remove the boat’s power source at any time, there will be no refunds of this fee; if you add a power source, however, you must submit paperwork to the DMV notifying them of the change and pay the $24 boat registration fee.

The boat registration process itself is very simple.  First, you must complete the DMV’s boat application paperwork, which can be either picked up at the DMV or printed out from most DMV websites.  Then, you must make sure you have your boat’s bill or sale or its invoice as well as the registration fee ready.  Then you simply take all the paperwork down to the DMV and register the boat.

What to Expect When Living on a Boat

Living on a boat can really be a great deal of fun as long as you go into it with the right frame of mind and you aren’t afraid of a little water.  Seriously though, some people think they are going to love living on a boat at the thought of it only to find out just how terrifying it is to rock back and forth on the water during a storm when trying to sleep at night.   Other people find living on a boat too isolating, especially when traveling to far away places on by water.  But then there are those who absolutely love living on a boat where they can be out in the open at any given time.

In fact even some families love living on a boat together even if the space is a little cramped.  No matter how much you like to adventure, there may be things that are just too different from living in a traditional home to make you feel comfortable.  For example the dishes have to be cleaned as you go, there simply isn’t room on a counter or in a dishwasher.  And many things you own will have to spend it’s time strapped in so it won’t fall, roll or break when bad weather comes around.

A bathroom you have been so used to won’t be nearly as roomy in a boat and might not even resemble anything more than a motor home bathroom would.  Being pretty limited as it is for 2 people, you could imagine just how cozy things would be for a small family of 3 or 4.  So if you plan to live on a boat with your family, it’s advised that you are close knit and enjoy spending a lot of time together.  The good things about living on a boat is being able to save money on heating a large house, and having the freedom to actually live anywhere you want to live, for example on the beaches of Hawaii for the summer.

As for television and phone access, satellite can help to accomplish this including offering access to the Internet.  Make sure you always have communication tools when traveling in your house boat though, as things can get very dangerous when traveling out at sea.  Finally, make sure all the water rules are known, understood and followed when out there on the sea, another thing that can help save lives.

Boating is a favorite summer pass time for many families and fisherman and in fact more and more people end up purchasing a boat each and ever year.  The problem with purchasing a boat nowadays though is the fact that everything comes right off the factory line without any consideration to a consumer’s particular needs.  And for this reason is purchasing a custom boat extremely popular, but also pretty pricey.  In fact many people spend up to 50% more on a customer boat than they would otherwise when purchasing a boat from a dealership.

Does this idea sound appealing to you?  What if you were to find out that custom really means custom including the boat layout as well as the colors and pretty much anything else you can think of.  If you are able to invest in a custom boat, there are quite a few benefits to doing so which includes enhancing the overall experience of your boating time.  And you can even customize your boat to work best in the areas you like most such as traveling, fishing or even winter strolling along a river or in the ocean.

And some good news is the fact that you don’t have to make all custom alterations at one time, up front.  You can actually start with what you are comfortable so you can start to enjoy the boat while adding to it as you can.  Also, if you are looking for a way to incorporate some things you want that are specific but you are on a limited budget, you can always invest in a partial custom boat.  In other words you can purchase a shell of a boat at reasonable rates and then build from there choosing from multiple different styles, colors and prices.

Make sure you go shopping for your new custom boat in person as opposed to using the Internet or the newspaper listings because this is a very big deal and you need to treat it like purchasing a new house or a new car.  Otherwise you might end up with a boat that isn’t quite a custom as you hoped or isn’t even how you pictured it at all!  The best way to go about owning your own boat is to purchase a custom boat since it will enable you to get exactly what you are looking for in the long run.
